With her experience as a .NET dev, DB admin, data architect and Cloud Architect, Jabulile Mertens can tell us a lot about what it takes when a company decides to go to the Cloud. Now, what does that have to do with you?

There is one great certainty in software: it will fail. It is not a question of if, but rather of when. When an error occurs in our system, all too often we pass it on to our users, leaving them no choice but to try again. Sometimes we write custom code to handle edge cases, and we do so with a dangerous lack of understanding of the problem at hand.
In this session we will discuss the importance of robustness in systems, and how to equip software with the ability to automatically recover from errors. After exploring different types of errors and considering different resilience strategies, we will take a deeper look at the retry pattern and how to apply it to software systems.

Who is Jabulile Mertens?
Jabulile began her career as a .NET developer. The more applications she built, the more intrigued she became with Data. This is what eventually led her to a role as Database Administrator in several companies including Kohera and Ingenico/Worldline. Then, as an Architect and Data Chapter Lead at Keytrade Bank, she worked closely with Data, DevOps and Infra teams on Architecture and Automation. Her passion and focus was not only on Tech but also on empowering people during the change in company culture and digital transformation as a Change Agent. This is how Jabulile ended up at Microsoft in the role of Application Innovation and Infrastructure Cloud Solution Architect to support customers in the public sector, including NATO and EU Agencies. Now her focus at Microsoft, meanwhile as Customer Success Account Manager, is not only on technology, but also on people - how to understand our customers' needs and how best to support them in their move to Azure Cloud and their digital transformation.
Who is Laïla Bougriâ?
Laïla is a software engineer at Particular Software, creators of NServiceBus. She has a passion for software and has built up her experience at companies such as SD WORX, Compuware, Bank J. Van Breda and has also been business manager of her bvba Igindo for over 10 years. Laïla is always looking for patterns, both in code and in yarn. In her free time, she loves to knit or crochet and to spend time with her children playing whatever the day brings!
